AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Women's Basketball team gave leagu- leader Lubbock Christian University all they could handle but eventually came up short, falling 66-57 Thursday evening.
The Hilltoppers got to the basket with ease in the first quarter, hitting layup after layup to lead by four, 20-16, at the end of the opening frame.
LCU made a run late in the second to go up six, 27-21, with 5:12 to go in the quarter.
ISABEL HERNANDEZ almost single-handedly got the Hilltoppers back into the lead by halftime, scoring seven points and assisting on another bucket to send SEU into the locker room with a slight two point advantage, 32-30, despite going 1-12 from long range.
The game remained tight throughout early in the third quarter, but the Chaps made a run late to lead 52-45 going into the final frame.
LEXI CUNNINGHAM hit a pair of free throws with 1:21 to play to pull SEU within 10 points, 64-54, but the deficit proved too extensive for the upset bid to become reality.
Hernandez led with 20 points and added a team high three steals while
MARYAM WILCHER posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
SEU falls to 9-10 on the year and 1-4 in conference play and look to stop the skid on Saturday as they host Newman at 1 pm.
