AUSTIN – DEIJAH BLANKS and
HALEY BLANKINSHIP both scored in double figures to lead the offensive attack, while
CHRISTINA MASON was the catalyst on the defensive end in St. Edward's 70-57 victory over Southwestern on Tuesday night at the RCC.
Blanks scored a game-high 22 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the floor, including 1 of 5 beyond the arc. Blankinship buried three 3-pointers and shot 50 percent from the field in the win.
Mason's set the tone from the start of the game, drawing a trio of charges in the first five minutes of action. She added six assists on the offensive end.
The Hilltoppers (3-0) raced out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter, while limiting the Pirates (0-1) to 27.3 percent shooting from the floor.
Southwestern bounced back in the second period, using an 11-2 run that was capped by Erin Toro's jumper to pull within three points (20-17). However, the Hilltoppers turned back on the attack and closed out the half on a 19-5 spurt that ended when
LEXI CUNNINGHAM buried a 3-pointer.
St. Edward's built up a large enough lead before halftime to play in front the rest of the way.
The Hilltoppers will continue their home stand on Saturday, as Huston-Tilltoson visits the Hilltop for a non-conference tilt. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
