Gunderson scores twice to lead SEU to 2-1 win at Texas Woman's

DENTON – SARAH GUNDERSON scored two goals in a five-minute span to lead St. Edward's to a 2-1 victory over Texas Woman's on Saturday night at Pioneer Soccer Park.

Gunderson netted the game-winner in the 50th minute. The Hilltoppers had a free kick from 30 yards out that was sent into the center of the box toward ELI CHAVEZ. Chavez collided with a Pioneer defender and the ball trickled out toward the top of the 18, where Gunderson was standing. She ran on to the ball and rocketed a shot to the far post that made it past the goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, St. Edward's was on the attack again.

INDIA WENTZ turned and sent a ball to the right side of the box, which allowed Gunderson to run on to it. She took two touches toward the goal and, with the goalkeeper coming out, took a high shot that deflected off the TWU keeper's hands and still had enough pace to cross the line for the second score of the contest.

Texas Woman's managed to cut the lead in half in the 82nd minute off a set piece.

The Pioneers lofted a corner-kick service to the far side of the goal and Maddy Harper headed it on target, but it was turned away by a SEU defender. However, the clearance was right toward Makenna Guidry who headed it back to the far post, where the ball deflected off a Hilltopper player and into the back of the net.

St. Edward's had a 9-8 advantage in total shot attempts and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

SARAH PRESTON attempted a team-high four shots, while Gunderson had three, including the two goals. ANNIE HALLS and CAROLINE KIRSCHNER each took one shot to round out the offensive attacks for the 'Toppers.

ANNABEL SWEENEY turned away three of the four shots on target taken by Texas Woman's.

St. Edward's improved to 11-4-2 overall and 10-0-2 in Lone Star Conference play to remain atop the league standings. The Hilltoppers own a one-point advantage over second-place Dallas Baptist. The Patriots have two matches remaining, while St. Edward's will play at Angelo State next Friday to close out the regular season.
