COMMERCE – St. Edward's won the opening set, but UAFS roared back and claimed the next three to collect a four-set victory in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Thursday. The Lady Lions won the match by scores of 16-25, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-17.
No. 6 seed UAFS (26-5) advances to meet the winner of No. 2 seed Angelo State and seventh-seeded UT Permian Basin in the semifinals on Friday.
The third-seeded Hilltoppers jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the match. SEU continued its attack to win the opening frame by nine points. The 'Toppers racked up 18 kills and hit .462 to claim the first frame.
St. Edward's then won the first two points of the second set, but the Lady Lions scored the next three and took away the momentum from the Hilltoppers for good.
SEU had only one more lead in the contest, as it took the first point of the fourth set on
MADISON HEALD's service ace.
The Hilltoppers posted 49 kills in the match, led by 12 apiece from
MELISSA MCNEIL and
MADDIE MIKSCH. Miksch hit .310 in 29 attacks with only three errors, while McNeil completed a double-double with 13 digs.
NIKKI GRANT collected a team-high 14 digs, while Alex McAndrew added a dozen.
St. Edward's wraps up the LSC Tournament with an 18-9 overall record.
