LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The 20th-ranked St. Edward's shot 48 percent from the field and rolled to a 94-68 win over Colorado Christian in the final game of the D2 Conference Challenge on Saturday at CCU's Event Center.
ASHTON SPEARS led the way with 21 points for the Hilltoppers (2-0).
LUCAS DORIA (15 points),
LUKE PLUYMEN (13) and
RYAN GARZA (11) joined Spears in double figures. Doria was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field, including one 3-pointer to tie his career high in points.
Meanwhile,
DORIAN LOPEZ grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds in 30 minutes of action.
AUGUST HAAS handed out a game-high nine assists to fuel the St. Edward's offensive outburst.
The Hilltoppers were in control of the game from the opening tip, jumping out to a 6-0 advantage. SEU pushed its advantage to as much as 12 in the first half, including after Lopez's 3-pointer with 40 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The 'Toppers held a 48-38 lead at the break.
Just over five minutes into the second half, St. Edward's built a 56-42 lead after Haas set up Spears for a layup. The Hilltoppers continued to roll in the final half, pushing out to a 26-point advantage, as Pluymen laid in the final two points of the game with 42 seconds left on the clock.
St. Edward's will return to Austin to host Southwestern on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the RCC. Prior to the game, the Hilltoppers will receive championship rings for winning the Heartland Conference last season.
