St. Edward's knocks off No. 16 West Texas A&M, 64-58

AUSTIN – DEIJAH BLANKS scored a game-high 24 points to lead St. Edward's to a 64-58 win over No. 16 West Texas A&M on Thursday night at the RCC. It marked the first win over a ranked team for the Hilltoppers since taking down then-No. 21 St. Mary's, 82-65, on Jan. 5, 2017.

Blanks dropped in 10 points from the charity stripe and hit 6 of 11 from the field to secure the upset victory.

St. Edward's (6-2, 2-1 Lone Star Conference) had a 14-11 lead at the end of the opening quarter. The Hilltoppers then outscored the Lady Buffs (8-3, 2-1 LSC) 15-9 in the second period to take a 29-20 advantage into the break.

With 5:50 left in the third quarter, St. Edward's pushed the lead to 10, as CHRISTINA MASON knocked down a free throw. CHARLI BECKER's two free throws with 1:31 remaining in the third period increased SEU's advantage to 43-29. West Texas A&M scored the final three points of the quarter to trim the lead to 11.

Tiana Parker started the final frame with a layup to cut the lead to nine. However, D'AVIYON MAGAZINE took a quick jab step and sent her defender stumbling back and then banked in a 3-pointer with 7:51 to play to push the advantage to 46-34.

The Hilltoppers continued to push the attack, and JAZMINE JACKSON's layup with 4:40 left to give the hosts a 54-38 lead.

The Lady Buffs reeled off a 16-3 run over the next 3-plus minutes to pull within three points (57-54). Mason knocked down two free throws on the ensuing possession to give SEU a 59-54 cushion. Blanks added a shot from the charity stripe to add another point for the Hilltoppers before Nathalie Linden hit a layup to cut it to four points (60-56).

The final 30 seconds of the contest featured St. Edward's working through the West Texas A&M press before Blanks was fouled. Blanks hit all four shots from the free-throw line to close out the contest.

The Hilltoppers shot 40.7 percent (22 of 54) from the floor, while the Lady Buffs hit 40.0 percent (22 of 55) of their shots from the field.

CHARLI BECKER joined Blanks in double figures with 11 points, while Jackson added 9.

St. Edward's will host Eastern New Mexico in another conference tilt on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
