HILLTOPPERS DOMINATE NORTHEASTERN STATE IN SEASON OPENER

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Baseball team opened the 2019 season with a bang, winning 4-1 and 11-0 (7) over Northeastern State University Friday evening.

GAME 1: SEU 4 – NESU 1

RYAN MCPHAIL opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a leadoff home run that everyone knew was out of the park as soon as it left his bat, putting the Hilltoppers up 1-0.

Northeastern State responded to tie the game 1-1 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, but SEU quickly got back to work in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead.

MATTHEW JIMENEZ reached on an error to lead off the inning and stole second to move into scoring position. McPhail got back to work with two outs, singling just past the outstretched arm of the diving shortstop to drive in Jimenez and put the Hilltoppers back on top. MORGAN ALLEN's shot to right center rolled to wall for a triple, driving home McPhail. The scoring continued as DYLAN MACKIN brought home Allen with a curving ball to center.

When all was said and done SEU led 4-1 and the pitching staff and defense took over from there to close out the win.

Mackin went 3-4 from the plate with one RBI while McPhail went 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

TYLER BROWN earned the win on the mound, allowing one hit and one run with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. KOEHLER VANDAMENT had a strong showing in his first appearance of the season with four strikeouts in two innings while allowing no hits.

GAME 2: SEU 11 – NESU 0

The Hilltoppers picked up where they left off to start game two, posting three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first.

RYAN HILL was impressive on the mound early as well, striking out four of the first six batters he faced in the game.

SEU continued to roll, scoring runs in every inning but the fifth while maintaining a clean sheet defensively en route to the demonstrative 11-0 win.

RYAN HILL was nearly untouchable on the mound, allowing just two hits in six innings of work with 10 strikeouts. Offensively, Mackin, JACOB VASQUEZ and McPhail posted two hits each while McPhail led with three RBIs.

The Hilltoppers open the season a perfect 2-0 and complete the series against Northeastern State with a single game on Saturday beginning at 1 pm.
