AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's comeback bid came up short as they fell 59-56 to Rogers State Wednesday evening.
RSU controlled the tempo throughout the first half, keeping the game at a slow, half-court pace and led by two at the break, 30-28.
As the second half got underway the Hillcats ran out to a ten point lead, 46-36, but the Hilltoppers turned up the pressure defensively with a full-court press and closed on a 9-2 run to trail by just three, 48-45, heading into the final frame.
RSU went up by seven early, but SEU continued to battle, pulling within four, 54-50, on ISABEL HERNANDEZ's three with four minutes to play. St. Edward's executed their offensive sets to perfection down the stretch but couldn't get the stop defensively. The Hilltoppers had a shot at the tie from beyond the arc as time expired, but LEXI CUNNINGHAM's shot was just off the mark.
The Hilltoppers were led by Hernandez who went 7-18 from the field for 18 points, adding in five rebounds, three steals and two assists. MARYAM WILCHER chipped in 10 points and SAMMIE DUFEK led with eight rebounds as SEU out-rebounded the Hillcats 37-28.
St. Edward's closes regular-season home action on Saturday, hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith at 1 pm for Senior Day.
