WICHITA, Kan. - St. Edward's improves to 21-2 on the year and 10-1 in Heartland Conference play after an 82-67 win over Newman Saturday afternoon.
SEU started well and led by as many as 17 points, 31-14, with 7:22 to go in the first half thanks to a 9-0 run. Newman was able to close the gap a bit before halftime, pulling within ten points, 38-28, at the break.
By three minutes into the second half the Hilltoppers had pushed their lead back to 17, starting the frame on an 11-3 run. Newman answered with a run of their own to pull within six points, 51-45 with 11 minutes remaining.
COREY SHERVILL's dunk sparked another run and back-to-back threes from Shervill and ASHTON SPEARS put the Hilltoppers back on top by double digits. The win was never in doubt from then on as the lead swelled to as many as 21 points.
ASHTON SPEARS led the way with 30 points on 10-21 shooting from the floor, 7-14 from three point range. COREY SHERVILL added 15 points and seven boards while AUGUST HAAS added 14 with six assists.
St. Edward's returns home to face Rogers State on Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30 pm.
