SAN ANTONIO – The St. Edward's women's tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches on Thursday. The Hilltoppers dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 10 Indianapolis and then rebounded with a 4-0 victory over Auburn-Montgomery to close out the day.
The loss to unbeaten Indianapolis (11-0) ended St. Edward's six-match winning streak. It marked the first loss for the Hilltoppers since Feb. 16.
St. Edward's (9-2) captured the doubles point against AUM (3-8) and then won three singles tilts to pick up the win.
BETH HAYWARD and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ improved to 7-0 this spring (12-2 overall) with a 6-3 triumph at the top spot. The pairing of Paola Carpio and
LOLI PERIM ran their record to 8-1 with a 7-5 win at the second flight.
The Hilltoppers went up 2-0 in the match as
ELISA GUILLEN netted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Julia Enderink at the No. 6 singles position.
VALENTINA MARTINEZ continued her strong spring season with a straight-sets win at the fourth spot. Martinez leads the squad with a 9-0 mark in dual-match competition.
Meanwhile, Hayward clinched the contest with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory at the second flight.
St. Edward's will play another ranked opponent in a neutral setting on Sunday, March 17, as the Hilltoppers will travel to Arlington for a matchup with No. 11 Central Oklahoma.
