SAN ANTONIO – The St. Edward's men's tennis team continued its winning streak on Friday following a 4-1 victory over No. 7 Hawai'i-Hilo.
The Hilltoppers (10-3), who have won nine consecutive matches, won the doubles point and then took three of four completed singles tilts to capture their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
After the Vulcans (5-2) picked up a win at the second doubles spot,
CHASE BARTLETT and
ANISH SRINIKETH were on the right side of a 6-4 decision at the top position to topple the nation's 12th-ranked duo.
Zach Robinson and
NICO MERCADO clinched the doubles point at the third flight with a 6-3 victory.
Hawai'i-Hilo picked up its only point in the match to start singles competition, as Vaclav Slezak, who is ranked 28th in the nation among singles players, handed Sriniketh a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
St. Edward's quickly regained the advantage, thanks to
MATEUS DE COL's straight-sets win at the fifth position.
GABRIEL ZUNIGA outlasted Luca Checchia in three frames at the fourth spot to give the Hilltoppers a 3-1 advantage.
CHASE BARTLETT closed out the match, earning his first singles win of the spring with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) victory at third position.
St. Edward's will face No. 16 Hawai'i Pacific at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in San Antonio.
