AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's softball split their mid-week doubleheader against Lubbock Christian Tuesday, winning game one 5-2 before dropping game two 7-4.
GAME 1: SEU 5 – LCU 2
Both teams got runners on in the first inning but it wasn't until the third that runs were put on the board. Lubbock Christian posted two in the top half of the inning with a two-RBI double from Arredondo with one out, but Ortega kept another from scoring, battling back from a 2-0 count to strike Villarreal out looking with a runner on third for the final out of the inning.
SEU wasted no time responding, scoring two of their own with two outs in the bottom of the third.
TY'ERYKA PRESTON walked and then stole second and third to move into scoring position.
KAYLA APPLEBY brought her home with a single and
KATHRYN CONNELLY followed it up a with an RBI triple to right field, tying the game 2-2.
Ortega and the St. Edward's defense settled in, retiring the side in back to back innings before getting a run again in the fifth offensively.
MORGAN LEWIS, Appleby and Connelly singled to load the bases and
KYLIE MICA brought home two, putting the Hilltoppers up 4-2 in the fifth.
SHELBY JANDA added one more for SEU in the sixth while the Hilltoppers' defense kept LCU from threatening, winning 5-2.
Connelly was a perfect 3-3 in the game while Ortega earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
GAME 2: SEU 4 – LCU 7
LCU used a steady stream of runs to take game two, scoring in every inning except the second and fourth.
ILIANA VARA suffered the loss in the circle while
KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ led at the plate, going 2-3.
SEU moves to 7-12 on the year and 4-6 in Heartland Conference action. They return to the field on March 22 for a double header at Oklahoma Christian beginning at 5 pm.
