OAKLAND, Calif. – The No. 22 St. Edward's women's tennis team posted a 6-1 victory over Holy Names to begin its Spring Break trip on Wednesday.
The Hilltoppers (10-3), who earned a national ranking during the match, won its second match in three outings.
St. Edward's swept the doubles action and then took five of the six singles matchups to pick up the win.
BETH HAYWARD and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ moved into the national rankings as the No. 15 doubles pairing. The duo cruised to a 6-1 victory to open the contest.
LAURA GALVAN and Paola Carpio clinched the doubles point for the Hilltoppers with a 6-1 win at the third flight.
Martinez, who also moved into the national rankings for singles play (No. 63), opened the second session with a straight-sets win.
St. Edward's won all of its singles points in straight-sets fashion.
LOLI PERIM won at the sixth spot, while Galvan picked up the fourth position win to make it 4-0. Carpio was a winner at No. 5 singles and Hayward finished off the match with a victory at the second flight.
The Hilltoppers will return to action Thursday against No. 11 Academy of Art in San Francisco. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. (CT).
