SAN FRANCISCO – The 11th-ranked Academy of Art women's tennis team handed No. 22 St. Edward's a 5-2 setback on Thursday.

The Hilltoppers (10-4) jumped out to an early lead after capturing the doubles point, but dropped five of the six singles matches in the second session.

BETH HAYWARD and VALENTINA MARTINEZ, who moved into the national rankings (No. 15) as a pairing on Wednesday, knocked off the top-ranked doubles team. Hayward and Martinez posted a 7-5 victory over Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp. It was the first loss of the season for the Thell-Lenntorp sisters.

Meanwhile, Hayward and Martinez improved to 15-2 overall this season, including a perfect 10-0 mark in the spring. It also marked their second upset of a nationally-ranked duo in the past week.

PAO CARPIO and LOLI PERIM also were victorious in their doubles tilt, claiming the second flight with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Maria Andrisani and Sofia Ragona. Carpio and Perim improved to 9-2 this spring as a pairing.

St. Edward's will close out its California trip on Friday with a non-conference match against Dominican. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT) at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center in San Rafael.
