WICHITA FALLS – The 25
th-ranked St. Edward's women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory against No. 29 Midwestern State on Friday at the MSU Tennis Complex.
The Hilltoppers (11-4) swept doubles action to claim the first point and then won four of six singles tilts to close out the contest.
Coming off their biggest win of the season, the third-ranked duo of
BETH HAYWARD and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ edged out another victory at the top spot. Hayward and Martinez picked up a 7-6 (7-5) decision to help in doubles play.
ELISA GUILLEN and
LAURA GALVAN started the decisions in doubles action for St. Edward's, earning a quick 6-0 victory at the third flight. Paola Carpio and
LOLI PERIM clinched the doubles point at the second position with a 6-2 triumph.
Martinez continued her strong singles play this spring to put the 'Toppers up 2-0. The senior from Katy earned a 6-3, 7-5 win against Bianca Duff at the third spot.
Carpio followed to make it 3-0 with her 17
th overall singles win this season.
KATE MALAZONIA clinched the match for St. Edward's with a victory at the second flight. She took down Lea Cizeron in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to improve to 16-6 this year.
Perim finished out the day with a win at the sixth spot. She rallied from a set down to defeat Taylor Gray 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).
The Hilltoppers will continue their schedule on Saturday at Cameron. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Lawton, Oklahoma.
