AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's was unable to get consistent offense going as the Hilltoppers fell 2-1 (9) and 6-0 Tuesday.
GAME 1: SEU 1 – STMU 2 (9)
St. Mary's scored first with one run in the second, but with one swing of the bat
KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ tied the game with a leadoff homerun to left center in the fifth.
The game remained tied heading into the seventh inning. The Rattlers got two runners in scoring position with one out, but
JULISA ORTEGA and the St. Edward's defense retired the next two batters to give SEU a shot at the win. The Hilltoppers seemed poised to do just that, loading the bases with no outs. St. Edward's was unable to get the break they were looking for, however, as three straight Hilltoppers lined out to end the threat.
After a scoreless eighth inning, STMU took the lead on an RBI single by Johns, putting the Rattlers up 2-1. SEU was unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning to suffer the loss.
Rodriguez led at the plate going 2-4 while Ortega suffered the loss in the circle, allowing two runs, one earned, on 11 hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
GAME 2: SEU 0 – STMU 6
St. Mary's rode the game one momentum into game two, scoring runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings while holding the Hilltoppers to four hits.
ILIANA VARA suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.
St. Edward's falls to 8-16 on the year, 5-11 in Heartland Conference play. They return to action on March 29 as they head to Lubbock to face Lubbock Christian.
