Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Texas - St. Edward's offense was strong as the Hilltoppers split Friday's series against Lubbock Christian, dropping game one 8-3 before rebounding for a big win in game two, 9-5.
GAME 1: SEU 3 - LCU 8
LCU came out of the gate hot, scoring three runs in the first inning and added one run in the third and fourth to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
SEU's bats came alive in the sixth with
CALLI BIRCH leading off the inning with a single and
TY'ERYKA PRESTON and
KAYLA APPLEBY followed suit to load the bases with no outs.
MORGAN LEWIS drove in the first run and
KYLIE MICA's single added the second run, cutting into the Chaps' lead 5-2.
Lubbock Christian quickly responded, however, scoring three in the bottom half of the frame to push their lead to six, 8-2.
Birch brought home one run in the top of the seventh but that is all the Hilltoppers could manage, falling 8-3.
Birch led at the plate, going 2-3 with one RBI.
JULISA ORTEGA suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
GAME 2: SEU 9 - LCU 5
After the break the Hilltoppers regrouped and reloaded and got to work right away, posting one run on Mica's RBI single to right to put SEU up early.
St. Edward's defense was strong, holding the Chaps to just one base runner in the first two innings.
The Hilltoppers got some insurance runs and then some in the third, as they unloaded for seven runs. SEU posted seven hits in the inning and batted around to go up 8-0.
LCU answered with three runs with one out but
REAGAN CARTER got Darling and Villarreal to fly out and ground out to end the inning.
SEU added another run in the sixth on a wild pitch and held LCU to two runs in the final inning to secure the win.
KATHRYN CONNELLY and Appleby went 3-5 from the plate in game two while Carter earned the win in the circle, scattering seven hits for five runs with seven strikeouts.
St. Edward's moves to 9-17 on the year and 6-12 in Heartland Conference action. The teams close the series on Saturday with a single game starting at noon.
