LAREDO, Texas – St. Edward's won its fifth consecutive match behind the strength of a 6-1 decision at Laredo Community College on Tuesday.
The Hilltoppers (6-3) were led by strong performances from the senior class.
St. Edward's started the match with two of three wins in doubles play to claim the opening point.
NICO MERCADO and
ZAC ROBINSON opened the contest with a 6-2 victory at the third flight. Seniors
MATEUS DE COL and
CHASE MOREHOUSE clinched the doubles point at the second spot with a 6-4 triumph.
The Hilltoppers won five of six singles matchups, four of which went the distance.
The Palominos earned their lone point at the second singles position to even the match.
However, senior
LOGAN BUIGNET outlasted his opponent at the fifth position to give SEU a 2-1 lead. Mercado earned a straight-sets win at No. 6 singles to extend the advantage to 3-1.
The Hilltoppers also won three-set matches at Nos. 1, 3 and 4 to close out the contest. In all three matchups,
ANISH SRINIKETH,
GABRIEL ZUNIGA and de Col won the first and third sets to win their respective tilts.
St. Edward's will travel to Wichita Falls on Thursday to play a pair of non-conference matches. The Hilltoppers will play MSU Denver at 10 a.m. and then face off with Colorado Mesa at 3 p.m.
