STEPHENVILLE – The St. Edward's women's tennis team pushed its winning streak to five following Thursday's 4-3 victory at No. 23 Tarleton State.
The Hilltoppers (7-1) rallied from a 3-2 deficit and picked up points at No. 2 and 4 singles to upset the TexAnns in their home opener.
KATE MALAZONIA tied the contest at 3-3 after outlasting Neetika Sud in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-4). Her win set up another for St. Edward's, as
VALENTINA MARTINEZ clinched the contest with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory at the fourth position.
The Hilltoppers started the match by capturing the doubles point after earning wins at Nos. 1 and 2.
Tarleton State picked up a win at the top singles flight to even the tilt and then took a 2-1 lead after the third spot finished.
PAO CARPIO tied the match at the fifth position, but a loss at the sixth spot gave the TexAnns a 3-2 lead.
The win over the ranked opponent was the first for St. Edward's this spring.
The Hilltoppers will return to Austin to host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, March 9. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Austin Tennis Academy.
