AUSTIN – The St. Edward's women's tennis team improved to 8-1 on the year and earned its sixth consecutive victory after defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville, 5-2, on Saturday at Austin Tennis Academy.
The Hilltoppers started the contest with two wins in doubles to claim the early point.
BETH HAYWARD and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ posted a 6-1 win at the top doubles spot, while Paola Carpio and
LOLI PERIM collected a 7-5 victory at the second position to clinch the point.
The Javelinas evened the match with a win at the fifth singles position.
Martinez then netted a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 4 singles to give the 'Toppers a 2-1 advantage.
Texas A&M-Kingsville again pulled even with a win at the sixth flight.
The rest of the match belonged to St. Edward's.
Hayward won in straight sets at the second spot and
LAURA GALVAN clinched the win at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Kata Malazonia closed out the contest with a come-from-behind, three-set win at the top position.
The Hilltoppers will resume play on Thursday, March 14 in San Antonio. St. Edward's will face both Indianapolis and Auburn-Montgomery in its next date of competition.
