WICHITA, Kansas – Fresh off a pair of emotional wins at home the St. Edward's softball team split Friday's doubleheader at Newman, dropping game one 8-0 before taking game two 3-1.
GAME 1: SEU 0 – NEWMAN 8
The Hilltoppers were unable to get their offense going as they were held to just three hits in game one. Newman posted runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth to hand SEU a rare run-rule loss.
TY'ERYKA PRESTON led at the plate, going 2-2 in game one.
JULISA ORTEGA suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout.
GAME 2: SEU 3 – NEWMAN 1
SEU posted one run to open game two on a sacrifice fly by Garza to set a tone for game two. All of the action happened in the sixth inning as the Hilltoppers scored two.
KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ kicked off the inning with a single and
KYLIE MICA followed with an RBI triple. Mica scored on
SHELBY JANDA's slow roller in the infield for the second run of the inning.
Newman scored one in response but the Hilltoppers locked it down defensively to secure the win.
Mica went 2-3 in the game with one RBI while
OLIVIA BURDICK earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
SEU moves to 14-22 on the year and 10-16 in the Heartland Conference. The two teams close the series on Saturday with a single game starting at noon.
