WICHITA, Kan. – An inside the park homerun in the bottom of the seventh scored two runs to launch Newman past St. Edward's Saturday afternoon.
SEU outhit the Jets 8-7 in the loss and were without an error in the contest while Newman had three errors on the day. The Hilltoppers stranded seven baserunners, however.
St. Edward's went up 2-0 in the third with a sacrifice fly from
KATHRYN CONNELLY and a Newman error allowed
MORGAN LEWIS and
KAYLA APPLEBY to score. Newman matched the Hilltopper effort in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own.
KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ homered to centerfield, her second of the season, to put SEU on top once again, 3-2 and were poised to take the win. The Jets had other plans.
REAGAN CARTER had worked to get two outs with a runner at first base. Newman's Kuhrt battled back from an 0-2 count and sent a shot down the left field line and the two runners were off to the races and were able to score the game-winners.
Carter suffered the loss to fall to 3-8 on the year, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Appleby,
SHELBY JANDA and Lewis all posted two hits in the game.
The loss drops St. Edward's to 14-23 on the year and 10-17 in conference play. They return home to host Texas A&M-Commerce for a non-conference double header on Wednesday, beginning at 1 pm.
