AUSTIN – St. Edward's women's soccer defense had an impressive outing in their home opener, but a free kick in the 98th minute lifted #7 Colorado School of Mines past SEU 1-0.
Both teams were aggressive offensively, combining for 14 shots in the first half. The defenses were even stronger, however, keeping the game scoreless.
With just five minutes to go in the half FAITH GOLZ had the best look of either side of the frame, collecting the ball 10 yards from goal in the middle of the box, but her shot went right at the Mines keeper who made the save to keep the half scoreless.
As the second half got underway both sides faced a firing squad of shots. ANNABEL SWEENEY held strong, making save after save, including two in rapid succession. With five more saves in the second half Sweeney and the Hilltoppers forced overtime and seemed poised for the upset.
Mines had what seemed to be the game winner in the 96th minute, but it skimmed off the bottom of the crossbar and was cleared out by SEU once again. Mines finally took the win in the 98th minute as Emma Peterson's lofting free kick deep in Hilltopper territory was headed home by Karolina Sidebaeck for the game-winner.
The Orediggers led 24-14 in shots while the Hilltoppers had six more corners in the loss.
St. Edward's returns to action on Sunday, hosting Regis at 1 PM.
