AUSTIN – St. Edward's men's soccer went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the nation but were unable to capitalize on opportunities, falling to eighth-ranked Midwestern State Thursday evening at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
After a two-hour lightning delay that occurred just before the original start time, the Hilltoppers and Mustangs took the field and SEU wasted no time logging their first shot. CHEN ADJEI had a hard shot from 25 yards out but had it sail over the crossbar and out of harm's way.
MSU had a few decent looks in the first half but it was St. Edward's that looked the most dangerous and seemed poised to strike first.
Adjei had another great look at goal midway through the first half as he brought the ball through the defense on a counter attack, expertly beating Mustang defenders, but his shot again went high.
The work of MARKO LILIC in goal kept MSU at bay as he made saves on shots at point-blank range late in the half to keep the match scoreless headed into halftime.
In the 49th minute the Mustangs took control of the match, heading home a lofting corner to lead 1-0. MSU was able to cut behind the SEU backline two more times, scoring in the 67th and 80th minutes to put the Hilltoppers in a hole they could not recover from.
St. Edward's trailed 16-15 in shots and 10-4 in corner kicks in the loss. They fall to 0-4-1 on the season and return to action on Thursday, September 26 to open Lone Star Conference action against Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m.
