AUSTIN – St. Edward's women's soccer exploded for six goals in their Lone Star Conference opener, easily defeating Texas A&M International 6-0 Thursday evening at Lewis-Chen Family Field. The win also was the 200th for head coach Nick Cowell on the Hilltop.
In only the seventh minute
ELI CHAVEZ started the scoring, putting away her own rebound from point blank range. She then assisted on Chidera Arririguzo's goal just five minutes later with a perfectly placed lofting corner kick.
SARAH PRESTON made it a three-goal lead in the 18th minute, scoring on
SARAH AVANT's free kick from left of goal while Chavez continued her impressive offensive execution, scoring just 28 seconds later.
The Hilltoppers went into halftime with a five goal lead thanks to
MADISON MCELWEE who put away
JULIA SPIELMANN's saved shot.
ANNIE HALLS posted the sixth goal of the match on a penalty kick.
EVELYN TIPLADY stopped a penalty kick from the Dustdevils in the 77th minute to preserve the shutout.
SEU led 19-4 in shots with 12 being on frame and did not allow a corner kick all match while earning 11.
St. Edward's improves to 2-4 on the season and starts LSC action with a 1-0 record. They return to the pitch on Saturday, facing St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
