AUSTIN – St. Edward's faced a tall task to open the 2019 campaign, facing No. 16 Colorado School of Mines Friday evening. Despite outshooting the Orediggers, 14-6, SEU fell 2-0.
St. Edward's set the tone early, controlling the majority of the first half with aggressive play on both ends of the pitch. Just two minutes into the contest the Hilltoppers earned their first of eight corners in the match.
JEREMY BISCHOFF got the first good look at goal in the 17
th minute, but his attempt was saved by Mines' Drew Johnson.
As the first half wound to a close SEU had their best opportunity yet, drawing a foul just outside the box that resulted in a free kick from 20 yards out.
RUBEN GONZALEZ's strike drifted just high of the crossbar, however, as the clock hit zero.
SEU started the second half with even more vigor, blasting shot after shot at the Orediggers. However, Mines took the air out of the Hilltopper's sail, scoring on a bending ball from Ben Overholt in the 60
th minute.
Overholt assisted on Ford Edwards' goal just four minutes later to hand the reins to Mines with a 2-0 lead. St. Edward's was able to find the back of the net the rest of the way to arrive at the 2-0 final.
SEU opens the year at 0-1 and returns to action on Sunday to face MSU Denver at 1 pm.
