AUSTIN – St. Edward's men's soccer returned to the pitch Sunday to face MSU Denver and controlled the pace the majority of the contest but ultimately fell 2-0.
SEU started strong, working for shots early in the game that were just off the mark and were never really threatened defensively throughout the first half. The Hilltoppers posted nine shots and one corner in the frame while allowing just two shots and one corner.
Both teams started the second half aggressively, collecting cards in the first ten minutes. The Roadrunners broke the stalemate in the 63
rd minute, executing a good give and go play as Jerry Gutierrez found Danny Bautista to the left of goal. Bautista's shot was low and towards the far post, just out of
MARKO LILIC's reach.
Bautista gave MSU Denver some breathing room by converting on a penalty kick in the 66
th minute.
SEU had a few solid looks at goal late in the contest, but were unable to convert as the match wound to a close.
PARKER FYFE took five shots in the loss while
GEORGE MURRAY and
CHEN ADJEI had three each. SEU led 14-6 in shots and 2-1 in corners but trailed 12-6 in fouls.
The Hilltoppers fall to 0-2 on the year and next head to Colorado Springs to face Fort Lewis on Friday at 5:30 pm.
