AUSTIN – St. Edward's dropped their second contest of the season, 73-62 to Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon. The Hilltoppers forced 22 turnovers with 11 steals but committed 31 turnovers in the loss.
The Lions shot out of the gate and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Junior guard
CHRISTINA MASON jump-started the Hilltoppers offensively as SEU erased the deficit to take the lead 14-12 with just over three minutes to play in the frame. By the end of the first period, St. Edward's trailed by just three, 17-14.
SEU went cold to start the second quarter, going scoreless for nearly six minutes as Commerce built on their lead. Back-to-back layups by
JAZMINE JACKSON sent the Hilltoppers into the locker room down 15, 39-24.
TAMUC posted their largest lead of the game, 21 points, with 6:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, but St. Edward's fought back to cut the lead down to 11, 73-62 with 1:29 to play on
D'AVIYON MAGAZINE's three from the wing. That was as close as SEU would get, however, as Commerce closed out the win.
The Hilltoppers shot 47.1 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from three-point range. Mason led SEU with 20 points on 8-12 shooting while adding three assists. Magazine chipped in 12 points.
Jackson continues to be a force on the glass, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds while
LAUREN CATHERMAN posted five steals.
St. Edward's falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in Lone Star Conference play. They return to action on January 2 to face Midwestern State at 3:30 pm in Wichita Falls.
