STEPHENVILLE, Texas – St. Edward's opened the game on a hot streak, posting a large lead early and never trailed, defeating Tarleton 91-79. The win improves SEU to 24-3 on the season and 17-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
It was a measured start for both teams until
COREY SHERVILL kick-started a run thanks to a second-chance three-pointer that set off a 22-6 run that saw SEU leading by 19, 36-17, with just under eight minutes to play.
St. Edward's maintained that 19-point advantage at the break, 51-32, and picked up right where they left off to go up by 24, 60-36, five minutes into the second half.
Tarleton never got closer than 11 points as the Hilltoppers secured the win.
ASHTON SPEARS was nearly unstoppable, posting 43 points on 10-19 shooting from the floor, 5-13 from three-point range and 17-20 from the free throw line. SEU shot 43 percent from the floor for the game and 40.6 percent from three point range. Shervill added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds while
AUGUST HAAS added 13 points.
The win ensures a first round bye for the Hilltoppers in the LSC Championship. They close the regular season on Saturday, February 29 at St. Mary's.
