FRISCO, Texas – A slow start was too much for the St. Edward's women's basketball team to overcome as the Hilltoppers fell 70-46 to West Texas A&M Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
WTAMU started the game on a 7-0 run and held SEU to just four points in the first quarter, putting the Hilltoppers in an 18-point deficit, 22-4. Despite the sizable hole, St. Edward's refused to give in and began chipping away and pulled within ten, 31-21, by halftime.
SEU started the second half strong, coming within seven points, 34-27, a minute and a half into the third quarter. The Lady Buffs had the answer, however, and closed the quarter on a 17-2 run to lead by 22, 51-29, heading into the final frame.
St. Edward's was unable to put together another run despite their best efforts in the fourth quarter, never pulling closer than 18 points.
DEIJAH BLANKS led with 21 points, going 9-15 from the floor and 1-1 from three-point range.
CHARLI BECKER was the only other Hilltopper in double figures with 10 points. SEU was out-rebounded 46-21, led by
JAZMINE JACKSON's six boards.
