AUSTIN – For the second time in two days, St. Edward's knocked off the nation's top-ranked team, defeating No. 1 Angelo State 7-4 Sunday at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers and Rams split the Lone Star Conference four-game series.
TYLER BROWN (3-1) struck out nine in five-plus innings to set the tone for St. Edward's (11-11, 11-11 LSC) on the mound.
He was backed by two runs in the first on
TY MARKEE's double.
Angelo State (19-3, 19-3 LSC) pushed its first run across in the fourth, but the 'Toppers answered in the bottom of the panel with two more tallies.
The Rams scored once in the fifth and once more in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Markee delivered again with a double that plated
BLAKE HOLUB.
DOMINIC MORACE then was called on to pinch hit and he turned on an offering from reliever Carson Childers and hit it over the left-field fence for a two-run homer.
ASU picked up one more run in the ninth, but
JACOB VASQUEZ was able to preserve the three-run advantage for the Hilltoppers after coming on in relief.
St. Edward's posted 10 hits in the game. Markee led the way with a 2 for 4 performance that included two doubles and three RBIs. Holub was 2 for 5 with two runs scored, while Morace was 1 for 1 with the two-run homer.
The Hilltoppers, who have won 10 of their last 14 games, will hit the road next weekend to play Texas A&M International.
