Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas –#9 St. Edward's suffered their first loss of the season, 92-81 to Midwestern State in their first road game of the year.
Midwestern jumped out to an early eight point lead, 15-7, seven minutes into the game and led by as many as 16 points, 28-12, with just under nine minutes to play in the frame.
With just under five minutes to play before the half, SEU got hot and went on an 18-3 run to tie the game at 41 on a pair of free throws by
KIJANA LOVE. By halftime, the Hilltoppers would take a two point lead into the break, 43-41.
St. Edward's held a slight advantage throughout the early parts of the second half, but MSU fought back to eventually regain the lead 59-58 with 11:20 to play. The Hilltoppers hung close, pulling within two on
RYAN GARZA's three, but the Mustangs were able to keep SEU at an arm's length the rest of the way to hand the Hilltoppers their first loss of the season.
SEU shot 43.5 percent from the floor and was led by
DANIEL VENZANT's 24 points, going 9-15 from the floor with nine assists.
B.J. MAXWELL contributed 17 points while
RYAN GARZA scored 11 and
JAKE KRAFKA added 10.
The Hilltoppers trailed 43-31 on the glass and was led by
LOGAN COOK who grabbed 12 boards.
St. Edward's falls to 2-1 on the year and 0-1 in Lone Star Conference play. They remain on the road for a rematch with Midwestern State on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
