AUSTIN – #11 St. Edward's men's basketball suffered their first home loss of the season, snapping a 34-game home win streak that dated back to the 2018-19 season, falling 75-65 to UT Permian Basin Friday evening.
The game started much as it did on night one until SEU went on a 9-0 run midway through the frame to lead by ten, 24-14, with 8:47 to play in the half. The Hilltopper's offense went virtually silent the remainder of the half, however, scoring just five points and one field goal in the final eight and a half minutes. Thanks to tough SEU defense, UTPB was only able to pull within four, sending St. Edward's into the locker room up 29-25.
The Hilltoppers' offensive woes continued into the second half, allowing the Falcons to tie the game 38-38 and eventually lead by seven, 47-40, with 12:16 remaining. St. Edward's pulled within three points a handful of times over the next four minutes but UT Permian Basin always seemed to get the bounce they needed to extend their lead.
St. Edward's was held to just 32.9 percent from the floor and 24.2 percent from three-point range in the loss. They also trailed on the boards, posting a -7 rebounding margin. DANIEL VENZANT and B.J. MAXWELL led offensively with 15 points each while JAKE KRAFKA was just one rebound shy of a double-double with ten points and nine rebounds, adding a team-high three steals. LOGAN COOK had a career-high 14 rebounds and added six points to lead on the glass for SEU.
The loss drops the Hilltoppers to 8-2 on the season and 6-2 in Lone Star Conference play. They return to the court on February 4 to take on #25 Texas A&M-Kingsville at home at 7 pm after a postponement by #6 West Texas A&M.
