AUSTIN – The cooler weather may have blown into Lewis Chen Family Field but the Hilltopper offense was on fire, beating UT Permian Basin 4-0 Saturday afternoon.
In the 15
th minute of action,
SARAH GUNDERSON played the ball across the face of goal to
KATIE GAY at the back post who headed the ball home to put SEU up 1-0. Despite 19 first half shots, SEU seemed poised to take just a one goal advantage into halftime, but
JULIA SPIELMANN had other ideas, touching the ball into the back of the net in the 38
th minute to end SEU into the break up 2-0.
St. Edward's continued to dominate as the second half got underway, spending the majority of the half in the attacking third of the field. Gunderson once again found Gay in the 58
th minute. In a near mirror image of the first goal, Gunderson's lofting cross was headed home by Gay to put the Hilltoppers up 3-0.
Gunderson was not done yet, however, scoring the fourth and final goal of the match unassisted in the 86
th minute. A miscue by UTPB's keeper found Gunderson with the ball in front of goal and she took advantage, burying the ball in the back of the net.
SEU led 33-2 in shots with ten corner kicks while not allowing a single corner opportunity to the Falcons. Gunderson led with six shots, two assists and one goal while
GEORGIA FOGARTY added four shots and
CAITLYN GONZALEZ five. Gay added four shots, three on frame, with her two goals.
Prior to the match, St. Edward's family and friends recognized 11 seniors for their contributions.
SEU improves to 7-3-2 on the year and 5-1-1 in Lone Star Conference action. They return to the road to face #19 West Texas A&M on Wednesday, October 20 at 5 pm.
