AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's women's soccer scored three goals five and a half minutes in the second half to remain undefeated in Lone Star Conference play, defeating Oklahoma Christian 3-2 Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless, balanced first half, Oklahoma Christian was the first to strike, scoring in the 55
th minute after a misplayed ball by the SEU defense allowed Kyla Lovelace to be one-on-one with the keeper out of the box.
With measured attacks, St. Edward's began to turn up the heat and finally had it pay off in the 72
nd minute.
KATIE GAY blasted a shot at goal and OC's keeper could only punch it away. Her save went straight to
SARAH PRESTON in front of goal who buried the ball in the back of the net to even the count.
Just five minutes later,
ARI RAMIREZ gave the Hilltoppers the lead, with Preston assisting. This time it was Preston's shot that was deflected by OC's keeper and Ramirez was there to put the ball in the net.
St. Edward's needed just 18 seconds to add to their tally as
ALYSSA GARCIA netted her first goal of the season, giving SEU some much needed breathing room to go up 3-1.
The goal proved to be a game-changer as OC's Loveless was able to keep the game within reach with a goal in the 87
th minute.
SEU's defense would not allow any more as they closed out the match for the win.
The Hilltoppers led 14-6 in shots and did not allow a single corner kick while earning three. SEU improves to 6-2-2 on the year and 4-0-1 in LSC play, setting up the matchup of the season as St. Edward's heads to DBU on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm.
