Rebounding margin leads to narrow loss in season opener

DENVER, Colo. – St. Edward's women's basketball was outrebounded 47-31 by Regis as they lost 62-57 to open the season Friday.

Both teams were slow to start offensively as the game was deadlocked at 9-9 at the end of the first quarter. A three-pointer by MCCALL HAMPTON started St. Edward's off on the right foot in the second quarter and SEU continued to pull away, going up by as many as 14, 28-14, with 6:21 remaining in the half.

Regis began to chip away and was able to get back into the contest and trail by eight at halftime, 34-26.

As the second half got underway, Regis picked up where they left off and held the Hilltoppers to just two field goals in the frame, evening the score 43-43 heading into the fourth.

St. Edward's never led in the fourth despite pulling within one point numerous times. Back to back layups by TAYLOR COCKERILL in the final 30 seconds got the Hilltoppers within three points, but a pair of Regis free throws sealed SEU's fate in the final seconds.

LAUREN CATHERMAN led the Hilltoppers with 13 points, going 6-10 from the field and 1-2 from three-point range as SEU was held to 37.3% from the field and 23.5 percent from beyond the arc. HALEY BLANKINSHIP added 12 points.

Cockerill and SAMMIE DUFEK led on the glass with five rebounds each with Cockerill adding eight points and one steal. Catherman also posted a team-high five steals.

St. Edward's opens the season at 0-1 and returns to action on Saturday, facing #23 Colorado School of Mines at 7 pm Central Time.
