Box Score DALLAS, Texas - Despite shooting 50% from the field and 43 percent from three-point range, St. Edward's men's basketball lost 84-77 to #4 Colorado Mesa Saturday evening.
As expected, the first half was tight throughout with neither team able to get a large advantage. SEU was able to get the first solid lead, going up by six, 36-30, with 1:50 left in the half after a pair of free throws by
UCHE DIBIAMAKA.
The Hilltopper offense went nearly silent the rest of the way, with the exception of a three by
GAVINO RAMOS on their final possession. St. Edward's led 39-37 at the break.
After trading baskets throughout the the first nine minutes, SEU trailed by just one point, 52-51 with 11:49 remaining. The Hilltopper offense then quieted as CMU went on a run that found them up by 13, 66-53.
LOGAN COOK got St. Edward's back on track with a jumper in the paint and
DANIEL VENZANT's layup with 5:42 left brought SEU within three, 67-64.
JAKE KRAFKA drained a three with 15 seconds remaining to pull the Hilltoppers within one, 78-77. Mesa took care of business at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
St. Edward's was led by
DANIEL VENZANT who posted 22 points, shooting 8-14 from the floor. Krafka added 19 points, going 7-14 from the field and 3-7 from three-point range.
SEU was narrowly edged out in rebounds, 30-28, with
LOGAN COOK leading the way with eight boards.
The Hilltoppers fall to 1-1 on the season following the loss. They come home for the first time this season to host St. Francis on Thursday, November 18 at 7 pm.
