Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gunderson nets game-winner in extra time to down ASU

AUSTIN – St. Edward's women's soccer earned three straight corner kicks to open overtime on a rain-soaked afternoon, spelling impending doom for Angelo State. REAGAN DYKES sent a low, driving corner to the near post and SARAH GUNDERSON expertly placed it home as SEU defeated ASU 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams were testing limits early on, attacking from as many directions as possible before field conditions began to alter attacks. Angelo State was able to capitalize off a penalty kick after a Hilltopper foul in the box in the 16th minute.

Gunderson, assisted by TRISTYN CABELLO, evened the count in the 33rd minute and sent the match into halftime deadlocked.

Driving rain throughout the contest challenged both teams as puddles formed throughout the playing surface. Both teams pressed on and had good looks at goal, but were unable to score the game-winner in regulation.

As overtime got underway, St.  Edward's turned up the pressure with a relentless offense. After two corner kicks that resulted in addition corner kicks, the Hilltoppers were finally able to take the win to close their regular-season home schedule.

SEU led 11-8 in shots and 4-2 in shots on goal while earning two more corner kicks in the match, 5-3. Gunderson led with six shots, three on frame, with two goals.

ABBY CARLSON earned the win in goal with one save.

St. Edward's improves to 9-6-2 on the year and 7-4-1 in the Lone Star Conference play, essentially securing their spot in the LSC Championship. They close the regular season on the road, facing Texas Woman's on Saturday at 1 pm.
