Box Score AUSTIN - St. Edward's women's basketball held Texas A&M-Kingsville to below 30 percent from the field and three-point range in a 69-60 win Saturday afternoon.
A tight contest throughout the first quarter ended with back-to-back threes by the Hilltoppers, making a 6-0 run to close the frame and lead by four, 19-15.
SEU ramped up their defensive pressure in the second quarter, holding the Javelinas to just eight points in the quarter and just three field goals. St. Edward's took a 13 point lead into the locker room, 36-23.
LAUREN CATHERMAN had nine points in the half with
MORGAN GARY chipping in seven.
St. Edward's had a slow start to the third quarter and were held scoreless for over six minutes, allowing TAMUK to close the gap to two, 36-34, with 4:16 to go in the third.
BELLA MUSCOREIL hit a pair of free throws to break the drought and once SEU was back in the rhythm they were rolling, closing the frame on a 10-3 run to lead by ten again, 47-37.
It was a different story in the fourth quarter as the Hilltoppers went up by 16 on Catherman's fast break layup with just under three minutes to play. With the lead in hand, St. Edward's closed out the game for the win.
MORGAN GARY and Muscoreil led with 12 points each while Catherman added 11 and
HALEY BLANKINSHIP 10. St. Edward's led 40-33 in rebounds with
MCCALL HAMPTON leading with eight.
St. Edward's improves to 7-4 on the year and gets a break for the holidays, returning to action on New Year's Eve to open Lone Star Conference action against Angelo State at 1 pm.
