Rattlers slide past Hilltoppers in final home game

AUSTIN - St. Edward's was edged out in their final regular season game of the season, falling 70-66 Wednesday evening.

It was a tale of two quarters in the first half. SEU's offense was stilted in the opening frame and was held to just one point in the first eight minutes. The Hilltoppers did not get their first field goal until 1:49 to play. By the end of the quarter, St. Edward's trailed 21-8.

The second quarter was a complete role reversal as the Hilltoppers outscored St. Mary's 30-18 in the frame. After leading briefly, StMU was able to send the Hilltoppers into the locker room trailing one, 39-38.

LAUREN CATHERMAN contributed ten of those points in the first half, going 3-5 from the field and 2-3 from three-point range.

The game remained tight throughout the second half with neither team able to take control. St. Edward's went up by five, 62-56, with just over four minutes remaining in the game on RONNIE CANTU's layup in transition. STMU stuck around and eventually took a five point lead themselves, 67-62, with 1:30 remaining on the clock. The Hilltoppers got close but were unable to secure a pair of defensive rebounds off of missed free throws down the stretch to suffer the loss.

MCCALL HAMPTON led SEU after a big second half, posting 15 points on 6-11 shooting from the floor, 3-4 from three-point range. CHRISTINA MASON added 13 while Catherman and CHARLI BECKER added ten each. SAMMIE DUFEK led on the boards with nine rebounds.

St. Edward's ends the regular season at 6-9 and will have to wait to see if they earn a spot in the postseason after UAFS canceled their final weekend of games due to COVID precautions. SEU currently sits in ninth place in the point standings with eight teams making the LSC Tournament.

Three seniors played their final game at the RAC. PHYDEL NWANZE, D'Aviyon Magazine and JAZMINE JACKSON were honored following tonight's contest for their contributions to the program along with student manager Isabella Rieger and graduate assistant Bria Johnson.
