SEGUIN, Texas - It has been a long time coming for St. Edward's softball to open their season and they were finally able to take the field Friday, facing DIII powerhouse Texas Lutheran. The Hilltoppers took game one 10-9 before dropping game two 11-3 in five.
GAME 1: SEU 10 - TLU 9
Texas Lutheran may have scored first but St. Edward's had consistent offense in game one, jumping out to a 9-1 lead thanks to an eight run third inning, highlighted by
GENISA MARRERO-CARTER's three RBI triple.
ALEXIS MASSIE homered to left center in the fourth to add to the Hilltopper lead, setting the possibility for a run-rule win. The Bulldogs had other plans, scoring two runs in the fourth to keep the game rolling and added one in the sixth before unloading for five in the in the seventh in desperation. With one swing TLU's Rebecca Snow pulled the Bulldogs within one with a grand slam to right center.
MCKENNA LEAMON entered and secured the final two outs to sieze the win for SEU.
VALERIE BRANT led at the plate, going 3-4 with one RBI while Massie was 2-4 with three RBIs. Leamon secured the win in the circle.
GAME 2: SEU 3 - TLU 11
Texas Lutheran wasted no time taking control of game two, unloading for six runs in the first inning. SEU's offense was quiet until the third when a pair of homeruns by
LAUREN WERNING and Massie drove in three runs.
The Bulldogs pressed on, scoring four in response in the third and adding one in the fourth to arrive at the run-rule win.
Marrero-Carter was the only Hilltopper with multiple hits in the game, going 2-3 at the plate.
LAUREN JARESH suffered the loss in the circle.
St. Edward's starts the season at 1-1 and return to action on Saturday, facing Southwestern for a doubleheader in Georgetown beginning at 1 pm.
