Volleyball unable to replicate defensive magic on road

LAREDO, Texas – Just one night after a record-tying performance, St. Edward's volleyball was unable to fend off the Dustdevil offense, falling 3-2.
 
TAMIU opened the match strong, jumping out to a 16-6 lead in the first set. St. Edward's pressed back but the deficit was too much to overcome as they dropped set one 25-16. The Hilltoppers were held to .000 attack percentage while TAMIU hit .235.
 
SEU's offense slowly got rolling, hitting .196 in the second set to win 25-21 and then were unstoppable in the third. The Hilltopper offense posted an astounding .519 attack percentage in the third set, winning handily 25-15.
 
The Dustdevils refocused and were able to even the set count with a 25-20 set four win.
 
St. Edward's led 3-0 to start the fifth but TAMIU put together an 8-1 run to lead 8-4, forcing an SEU timeout. SEU stopped the run and scored two points to close the gap, but TAMIU closed the match on a 6-2 run to seal the win.
 
The Hilltoppers were held to .163 attack percentage with MAYA SMALLS leading the way with 13 kills and a .310 hitting percentage. EMILY TRAN posted 28 assists while LAURA DOOCY led at the net with five blocks. MCKINLEY SELLERS was a bright spot for the SEU defense, recording 28 digs in the loss.
 
St. Edward's falls to 1-3 on the year and 1-3 in Lone Star Conference play. They return home for the first round of battle of the Saints, facing St. Mary's at home on February 9 at 4:30 pm.
