AUSTIN - St. Edward's softball found their groove offensively in a pair of big wins over Midwestern State Sunday. The Hilltoppers took game one 6-3 and continued on to win 6-4 in game two.
GAME 1: SEU 6 - MSU 3
A shaky start to the game allowed MSU to jump on top, but were held to just one run despite loading the bases with one out.
SEU did one better in response in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs.
KAYLEE MCQUILLAN made the Mustangs pay with a double down the field line to drive home two.
LAUREN WERNING drew a walk, loading the bases once again. When all was said and done, SEU led 4-1 through one.
Both starting pitchers settled in following a busy first inning, posting scoreless innings in the second and third.
With bases loaded in the fourth,
VALERIE BRANT hit a lofting single into left field, driving home a pair of runs to put the Hilltoppers up 6-1.
With a comfortable lead in tow, Leamon and the SEU defense closed out the win. Five Hilltoppers logged a hit while Leamon earned her third win of the year in the circle. She allowed six hits with six strikeouts with three walks/
GAME 2: SEU 6 – MSU 4
It was a fruitful first inning for both teams with two runs each in the opening frame. A quiet second inning gave way to an explosive third. MSU pushed a run across before
CADIE BELLE CURRIE entered in relief. The Mustangs scored one more run before Currie closed out the inning.
SEU jumped into action with three straight singles and tied the game on
CHARLOTTE NUCCIO's RBI single. A two RBI double to right center by
GENISA MARRERO-CARTER put the Hilltoppers up 6-4.
Defenses took over from there on out as SEU secured the win.
Currie earned the win, her second of the year, scattering three hits with no runs while striking out three and walking one. Marrero-Carter went 2-4 with two RBIs while McQuillan went 2-2 with one RBI.
The Hilltoppers improve to 6-6 on the year and 3-5 in Lone Star Conference play. They return to action on Friday, hosting Oklahoma Christian for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
