AUSTIN - St. Edward's women's soccer used two goals within four minutes of each other in the second half and added one more just before time expired to win a crucial Lone Star Conference game against St. Mary's Wednesday.
Both teams attacked early with SEU getting the first real shot off as
REAGAN DYKES' shot sailed just wide of frame less than five minutes in.
St. Mary's was the first with a shot on frame 15 minutes into the game in the form of a header, but
MEGHAN DUNNING held strong to make the save and keep the game scoreless.
WREN BLANCHETTE seemed to have the first goal of the match with ten minutes to go in the first half, firing off a shot from 20 yards out that careened off the crossbar before being collected by the Rattler's keeper.
Just moments into the second half, SEU's
SARAH PRESTON took a low, driving free kick that was narrowly saved. A Rattler foul in the box gave
EMMA VIQUEZ a penalty kick with just over 30 minutes remaining. Viquez calmly placed a perfect ball low and away from Koerner in goal to score the eventual game winner.
A beautiful crossing ball from
KATELYN SMITH from left of goal found
SARAH GUNDERSON who headed the ball home to give SEU some breathing room less than four minutes later.
The Rattlers turned up the heat but the St. Edward's defense held firm and with 21 seconds left
ALLY FLOTH got in on the action with a low, driving ball into the back of the net for the Hilltoppers to arrive at the 3-0 final.
SEU led 12-8 in shots while allowing just one Rattler corner kick. Dunning earned the shutout win with four saves on the afternoon.
St. Edward's improves to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in Lone Star Conference play with the win. They return to action on Wednesday, March 31 to close the regular season at UT Permian Basin.
