Hilltoppers take two in home finale

AUSTIN – St. Edward's softball closed their home season on a high note with a pair of wins over Eastern New Mexico Friday, winning 8-5 and 5-3.

GAME 1: SEU 8 – ENMU 4

A scoreless first inning gave way to a huge two-out rally in the second as the Hilltoppers took full advantage of two Greyhound errors. The biggest play was a two-RBI single by ALEXIS MASSIE as SEU unloaded for five runs in the frame.

Just one inning later, Eastern New Mexico got on a roll thanks to a base clearing double by Galindo that brought home three runs. The Greyhounds ended with three runs in the inning to cut the St. Edward's lead to just one, 5-4.

ENMU pressed on in the sixth, placing runners on first and second and seemed poised to even the score, but LAUREN JARESH got Bustillos to strikeout looking on the inside corner, ending the threat.

Important hits in the final frame by KATHRYN CONNELLY and VALERIE BRANT drove more runs home, giving SEU some breathing room, 8-4, heading into the final three outs.

Jaresh and the SEU defense took care of the rest to close out the win. MCKENNA LEAMON earned the win in the circle while Jaresh recorded a save.

Connelly led at the plate, going 2-4 with one RBI and two runs.

GAME 2: SEU 5 – ENMU 3

St. Edward's pushed one run across to open the game despite no hits and led 1-0 until the fourth inning with LAUREN WERNING sent the ball over the left field fence for a two-RBI shot to put SEU up 3-0.

ENMU loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and were able to push across enough runs to tie the game, 3-3.

Needing to score to win, the Hilltoppers got to work in the seventh and were able to score two, again using Greyhound errors to their advantage.

The two runs were enough for Jaresh to close things out in the circle for the win, needing just four batters to accomplish the goal and earn the win.

Werning led at the plate, going 1-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Hilltoppers improve to 16-18 on the year and 12-16 in Lone Star Conference play. They return to action on Sunday, facing #12 Texas A&M-Commerce for a doubleheader starting at noon.
