Volleyball returns to winning ways in straight-set win over DBU

Box Score DALLAS – St. Edward's volleyball returned to form to earn their first Lone Star Conference win, defeating DBU in straight sets Saturday afternoon.

It was a shaky start for SEU as they fell behind 7-3 early in the first set, but CAROLINE SWAN's serving got the Hilltoppers back on track with a pair of aces to tie the match 7-7. St. Edward's outscored the Patriots 13-2 midway through the frame to lead 16-9 before closing out the win 25-20.

The second set was close early on and it wasn't until halfway through the frame that St. Edward's put together another run to get some breathing room. LOURDES GOMEZ came on strong offensively late in the set to hand SEU the 25-21 win.

EMILY TRAN continued to keep the DBU defense confused, working the ball around to various hitters throughout the third set. After the set was deadlocked at 12, SEU had four kills by four different Hilltoppers to lead 17-12. The five point lead was more than enough to close out the match as SEU never allowed the Patriots within striking distance.

Gomez led all attackers with 13 kills while JILLIENNE CONNELL made the most of her opportunities, posting a .667 attack percentage with nine kills on 12 attempts. She also led SEU with three blocks. Tran recorded 32 assists and ten digs while SARAH KONOVODOFF led defensively with 12 digs.

St. Edward's improves to 6-3 on the season and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play. They return to action on Friday as they host Texas A&M-Commerce in their home opener. First serve is set for 6 pm.
