AUSTIN – The St. Edward's volleyball team was overwhelmed by a brutally efficient Angelo State attack, losing to the Rams in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-21, and 25-15.
Both teams exchanged big attacks in the first set with six ties and a lead change through the first half of the set. After a MAYA SMALLS kill put the Hilltoppers within two at 11-9, the Rams reeled off a 14-3 run led by Hannah Kinnison's five kills over that stretch.
The Rams outhit the Hilltoppers with a 19-9 edge in kills over the first set on a blistering .370 hitting percentage.
Smalls led a more composed, potent St. Edward's attack in the second set with seven kills on 12 attacks and one error for a .500 hitting percentage. CAROLINE SWAN contributed three kills on seven attacks in the set, helping the team to a .308 hitting percentage. Angelo State countered with a balanced attack led by Sydney Mundkowsky's six kills on a .417 clip and three other Rams with three kills each for a team .366 hitting percentage.
Mundkowsky helped put the match away with seven kills on 11 attacks in the third set to complete the sweep.
Smalls lead St. Edward's with 12 kills on a .312 clip. Swan and LOURDES GOMEZ each contributed five kills. SARAH KONOVODOFF led the team with 17 digs, and ESTHER GRUSSING had 19 assists.
St. Edward's drops to 6-14 with the loss, including 3-6 in conference play. The Hilltoppers will host Texas Permian Basin (10-10, 5-4) tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
