SEU victorious in first two games of the season

SAN ANGELO, Texas - On Friday, the St. Edward's softball team opened their 2022 campaign against Bethany College and East Central Oklahoma in the 2022 George and Ola McCorkle Challenge. The Hilltoppers won both games, beating Bethany 6-0 and ECU 9-4.

 

Game One: SEU 6, BC 0

 

The Hilltoppers struck early, putting up four of their six runs in the first three innings, giving them a comfortable 4-0 advantage over the Bison.

 

Alexis Massie got things started in the top of the first with an RBI single up the middle. In the second, MEGAN MORRIS drove home a run with an RBI double to left-center. And in the top of the third, Jordan Neely and Lauren Hoyt each picked up their first RBI's of the season.

 

Alexis Massie drove in two more runs to give the Hilltoppers a 6-0 lead in the top of the sixth.

 

Starting pitcher McKenna Leamon pitched six innings, giving up just one hit and striking out nine to earn her first victory on the season.

 

Game Two: SEU 9, ECU 4

 

In-game two of their doubleheader, the Hilltoppers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Valerie Brant got things started with an RBI single up the middle, and Megan Morris doubled home two runs to give the Hilltoppers the early lead.

 

But in the home half of the first, ECU cut SEU's lead in half after a two-run double of their own. In the home half of the fifth, ECU tied the game up at 4-4 after a two-run homer off Cadie Curie. 

 

The Hilltoppers quickly responded, putting up four runs in the top of the sixth to take back their lead. Two errors and a double by Genisa Marrero-Carter and Jordan Neely gave SEU an 8-4 lead. One final run in the top of the seventh gave the Hilltoppers a commanding 9-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

 

Renna Toomey got the win as she shut the door on the Tigers, giving up just two hits in her relief outing, earning her the win. 

 

SEU is back in action again tomorrow against East Central Oklahoma at 10:15 am and against Bethany College at 5:15 pm.
