Hilltoppers split doubleheader Sunday against Roadrunners

February 20, 2022

DENVER, Colorado -  The St. Edward's softball team split their Sunday doubleheader against Metro State. The Hilltoppers won game one 11-1 and lost game two 7-8.

Game One: SEU 11, MSU 1

In-game one, the Hilltoppers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Megan Morris got things started with an RBI double, and Valerie Brant drove home Morris on a two-run blast over the left field wall.

After a scoreless second, the Hilltoppers put up three more runs in the third to double their lead to 6-0. A two-run homer by Alexis Massie and an RBI double by Katie Dillon drove home the runs for the Hilltoppers.

SEU tacked on three more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 9-1. MEGAN MORRIS stole home to score the innings first run, while RBI singles by Jayda Lafluer and Kaylee McQuillian put the game out of reach.

In the top of the fifth, a two-run double by Valerie Brant gave the Hilltoppers an 11-1 lead.

McKenna Leamon pitched a complete game allowing just one run on four hits.

Game Two: MSU 8, SEU 7

In-game two, the Roadrunners jumped out to the early lead, taking a 4-1 lead after the first.

In the top of the third, SEU scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead. Valerie Brant drove in the innings first run on a groundout to third base. A two-run double by Jordan Neely and an error allowed the Hilltoppers to take the lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Roadrunners scored four of their own runs to reclaim their lead and go up 8-5. In the fifth, an RBI double by Alexis Massie and an RBI single by Katie Dillon pulled the Hilltoppers within one.

SEU's comeback would fall just short as they lost to MSU 8-7. Pitcher Reena Toomey suffered the loss.

SEU is back in action Friday in San Antonio to face rival St. Mary's. First-pitch is set for 5 pm.
