Hilltoppers sweep Pirates in two-game series

AUSTIN, Texas - On Wednesday afternoon, the St. Edward's softball team defeated Southwestern University in a two-game series. The Hilltoppers won game one 3-2 and game two 7-0.

 

Game One: SEU 3, SWU 2

 

The Hilltoppers struck first in the bottom of the second after a scoreless first. Kathryn Connelly stole home to score the game's first run. Later in the inning, Lauren Hoyt drove in the Hilltoppers second run on an RBI single, making the score 2-0. 

 

In the bottom of the third, Jordan Neely extended the Hilltoppers lead to 3-0 after her RBI single up the middle. 

 

After a scoreless fourth, the Pirates put up two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to one run. An RBI double and an error helped the Pirates pull within one, but their comeback would fall short as the final score stayed 3-2.

 

Renna Toomey pitched a complete game giving up just one earned run on five hits while striking out eight batters in the win.

 

Game Two: SEU 7, SWU 0

 

The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second after a scoreless first inning.

 

The Hilltoppers put up five runs to take an early 5-0 lead. Lauren Hoyt got things started with an RBI single. Kailee Skidgel drove in two more runs on an RBI double. Genisa Marrero-Carter drove in the innings final runs on a two-run homer. 

 

After a scoreless third, the Hilltoppers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach. Katie Dillon scored on a fielder's choice, and Jordan Neely drove in the game's final run on an RBI double to right field. 

 

Pitcher Cadie Currie picked up the win pitching five innings while giving up just two hits and no runs in the win. 

 

SEU is back on the road Friday as they take on Oklahoma Christian in a two-game series. First pitch for game one on Friday is set for 3 pm.
